Ergonomic analyzes are not only of particular importance in the office workplace

Keeping employees in the processes longer through ergonomic optimization

Although the subject of ergonomics enjoys great popularity, it is often only associated with working conditions in the office workplace. However, jobs in logistics or production, for example, are just as affected. For example, many repackaging and packaging processes take place here. Experienced employees can be kept longer in the processes by optimizing the ergonomics. Motion-Mining® technology supports companies in evaluating the compatibility of humans and technology through digital ergonomics analyzes. For a digital ergonomics analysis, the activities performed and the requirements for the user are considered; the equipment used and the knowledge used.

Ergonomics optimization using MotionMining®

Analysis and optimization options (ergonomics)

An ergonomic optimization as part of the MotionMining® solution approach reveals hidden potential. The approach, based on ergonomics optimization, allows an assessment of manual work with wearables (wearable sensors, similar to fitness trackers) and a deep learning algorithm, better known as artificial intelligence. Work processes are recorded automatically and anonymously during the ergonomics analysis for subsequent optimization (ergonomics), processed by artificial intelligence and converted into human-readable key figures. We currently differentiate between more than 60 different motion sequences in our ergonomics analysis / ergonomics optimization. Critical movements such as bending over from the back, carrying, lifting, holding, overhead activities are considered in ergonomics optimization. These movements are recorded in movement intervals during the ergonomics analysis and optimization (ergonomics). In addition to the typical movements, vibrations and repetitions can also be recognized as part of the ergonomics optimization. On the basis of the data from the ergonomics analysis, excessive and long-term loads can be recognized and measures for avoidance and optimization (ergonomics) can be derived.

Differences to a manual efficiency and ergonomics optimization

Manual optimization (ergonomics)

Such efficiency and ergonomics analyzes, such as MTM, REFA or key feature method, are usually carried out manually. These ergonomic optimization methods are therefore extremely time-consuming, specific and require a deeper understanding of the process. Traditionally, these efficiency and ergonomics analyzes are recorded for optimization (ergonomics), for example, and then evaluated by a trained process engineer with the help of a stopwatch and a clipboard. Since the process engineer accompanies an individual employee over the entire duration of the efficiency and ergonomics analyzes for optimization (ergonomics) and uses, among other things, photo or video analyzes for documentation, such ergonomics optimization is fundamentally not anonymous. In contrast, efficiency and ergonomics analyzes for optimization (ergonomics) with motion mining over the entire recording period and the subsequent analysis are anonymous. When evaluating an analysis to optimize ergonomics, only average values are used, ie at least two data tracks are evaluated.

Ergonomic design of workplaces

For what purpose should ergonomics optimization be carried out?

The gripper zone is to be considered when preparing the material.

Also, the notion that this is associated with some form of employee wellness is another popular misconception. It is up to ergonomics to define meaningful steps with which the activity can be carried out more effectively. Based on this, the following can be concluded: 1) Responsible, carefully thought-out optimization (ergonomics) combines improved productivity and the necessary protection for employees. 2.) In view of the diverse interrelationships between manual activities in industrial production, the consistent implementation of ergonomic principles is urgently recommended at this point.

Optimization (ergonomics) of the workplace in production

An added value in the context of ergonomics optimization arises on both the employee and the employer side

In production, both the company and all employees benefit from ergonomic workplace design. Performing their work in an ergonomic work environment significantly reduces fatigue and health risks. As a result, productivity is increased, while the error rate decreases. This also helps to reduce the number of days absent due to illness.

But at what point should optimization (ergonomics) be aimed for in production? For example, let’s start with sitting, a classic in ergonomics. But whether or not sitting actually represents the new smoking remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that an incorrect sitting posture has been shown to cause long-term damage to health. It is important to always pay attention to the best quality when choosing suitable chairs.

For example, today’s work chair must be individually adjustable through infinitely variable adjustability so that the back is protected. Employees should be able to make this adjustment while sitting. Only then can it be determined to what extent the selected setting is actually the correct one. Additional quality features for a chair in the workplace

in the industry are z. B. Seat cushion, solid, easy-care support, synchronous mechanism, adjustable lumbar support.

The importance of tables and gripping zones in ergonomics in industry

As part of the ergonomics optimization, the individual adaptability of the workplace to the employee is considered

However, when working at a work table that does not meet the desired ergonomic requirements, the best work chair loses its effectiveness. A work table should therefore also be height adjustable (electrically). The optimal grip position in production only results from the interaction of the individually adapted work chair and the work table. Sufficient freedom of movement and a solid table construction complete the requirement profile with regard to an optimal ergonomic work surface.

The grip space plays an especially important role when it comes to the planning of materials and their provision. The two-handed zone is directly in front of the worker on his desk. If the worker is able to grip devices and materials easily and without turning, this is defined as a one-hand zone. Due to the fact that it is determined by body proportions and size, the grip zones vary from person to person. A personal adjustment is therefore also necessary for efficient work processes. Swivel arms are ideal here, so that frequently required materials and aids can be made available in an ideal manner. The result is shorter access options, which reduces throughput times and improves productivity while at the same time relieving the workforce.

Optimization proposals within the scope of a Motion-Mining® ergonomics analysis

Efficiency and ergonomics optimization often go hand in hand

Measures for optimizing ergonomics include, for example, the correct placement of the products in order picking. In this way, it is possible to protect employees by reducing the amount of stooping and overhead work. Optimal route planning so that walking distances that are too long can be reduced is a typical measure for ergonomic optimization. When optimizing (ergonomics) the routes, an increase in the efficiency analysis takes place at the same time. Efficiency and ergonomics optimization are often carried out at the same time.
